For Dad's Advice Index
Dads...although you can't breastfeed your baby, you do play a key role in the success of breastfeeding...
Dad’s support is vital
- You can support and encourage your partner while she is feeding by bringing her drinks and making sure she is comfortable.
- When Dad feeds Mom, he feeds baby too, so get cooking!
- When your baby wakes, you can change his nappy before handing him to Mom for feeding.
- Sit with your partner and share the feeding process. You don't need to hold a bottle to feel close to your baby.
- Skin-to-skin contact is as intimate an experience as breastfeeding. Once your baby has finished a feed place your baby, dressed in a nappy, next to your skin (remember not to wear strong aftershave as this could irritate your baby’s skin).
- Within minutes your baby’s temperature, respiration and heart rate settle and you both experience the same closeness as a mother does while breastfeeding
- This will greatly enhance the father-baby relationship leading to a deeper bond as your child grows
- Other ways to stay close to your baby include bathing/showering together (babies really love this!), baby massage or carrying your baby in a sling.
So go on Dads, 'get your kit off' and cuddle your baby!
